Waste from food makes up around 8% of the global greenhouse gases to which humans have contributed. Nearly 30% of the world's agricultural land - 1.4 billion hectares (!) Is used to grow products that are never consumed.
Approximately 43 billion cut flowers are produced annually. It is estimated that 10-20% of this is waste. In other words, flowers that die or are so damaged that they cannot be sold.
OptiCept's technology enables the production of a more nutritious diet. With our technology, more nutrients can be extracted from the same amount of raw materials. We can also extend the shelf life while maintaining quality so that more people can enjoy the product.
Research shows that plants and flowers in an indoor environment affect human's well-being and can contribute to better air.
Flowers are mainly produced in South America and Africa. The consumption is primarily done in the US or Europe. A lot of transports are made via air freight. during Valentine's day alone, approximately 360 000 tons of carbon dioxide is produced from flower transports. This equals the emissions from 78 000 cars during a year.
The flowers are then often transported by refrigerated trucks who emit about 25% more than regular trucks.
Growing flowers requires a large amount of water and also during transport, water consumption is high.
In the food industry, many manufacturing processes require high energy consumption.
A life-cycle assessment is a method for creating an overall picture of the total environmental impact during a product's life cycle from raw material extraction, manufacturing process, use to waste management. This also includes all transport and energy consumption in the intermediate stage.

By optimizing OptiCept's technology, we naturally reduce waste and wastage. Extended shelf-life is of course also a contributing factor.

OptiCepts applies a gentle treatment with pulsating electric fields (PEF). This means that more vitamins, antioxidants and other important nutrients are retained. In the end, a much healthier product and also improved taste, color and aroma.
OptiCept's primary impact occurs during the manufacturing process. By applying our technology, the process is streamlined, shorter processing time means less energy consumption. We also enable increased extraction from the same / less raw material.
By extending the shelf-life, less frequent transports are required. It is then also possible to choose means of transport with less environmental impact.
More vigorous flowers with longer lifetime contribute to reduced wastage.
OptiCept's technology can contribute to reduced water consumption for growers. In addition, we improve rooting, which means that less pesticides need to be used.
The end customer is reached by a product of higher quality with an increased lifetime of an average of 50%.
By strengthening the flower's vitality, less water consumption is also required during the manufacturing process.
When it comes to transportation, OptiCept's technology makes a huge difference. Until now, a large proportion of flowers is transported by air, with our technology we enable transport via other alternatives. We can reduce the need for water during transport depending on where we apply our treatment.
